New Year, Same Resolutions: Why We Keep Doing This to Ourselves

Ah, New Year’s resolutions. The annual ritual where we promise ourselves (and anyone who will listen) that this year will be different. This year, we’ll finally become the flawless, ultra-productive, kale-smoothie-drinking versions of ourselves that we’ve always dreamed of. Spoiler alert: it never happens.

Sure, the intention is noble. Who wouldn’t want to start the year with a fresh set of goals and a renewed sense of purpose? But let’s be real for a moment. By the time February rolls around, most of those resolutions are long forgotten, buried under a pile of post-holiday sales receipts, and gym membership cards that are gathering dust.

The problem isn’t with the resolutions themselves. It’s with the unrealistic expectations we set. We decide to overhaul our entire lives overnight, expecting instant results without considering the effort required. We pledge to wake up at 5 AM (not me I can say that much), learn a new language (Vietnamese or Tamil for me), and read a book a week (this seems to be the only one that I seem to manage and even surpass it most times)—all while maintaining a full-time job and a social life. It’s no wonder we burn out by January 15th.

So here’s a thought: instead of setting ourselves up for failure with grandiose (and frankly, unattainable) goals, why not focus on small, manageable changes? Resolutions that actually fit into our lives, rather than disrupt them. How about aiming to drink more water or spend less time scrolling through social media (the shock, the horror!) ? Simple, achievable, and infinitely more sustainable.

Let’s kick off this new year with a resolution to be kinder to ourselves. To set realistic goals and celebrate small victories. Because the truth is, we’re already pretty great just the way we are. And if we happen to improve a little along the way, well, that’s just the cherry on top.

Happy New Year, everyone. Let’s make it a good one—without the unnecessary pressure.
